Abstract

The research is aimed at examining the time required for the variability stabilization of Scots pine radial growth increments in relation to stand structure, based both on a theoretical model and field data. The employed model is based on Markov chains and allows to assess the stabilization duration. Variation coefficients which smooth the climatic factors and tree age influence, are chosen as the studied model parameters. It is shown that the duration of pine increment variability stabilization depends on the number of dominants in the biogroups. It is found that stabilization slows down with an increase in the number of dominants. The theoretical results were verified at three specially protected natural areas (SPNA) with boreal phytocoenoses. Similarities and differences were revealed in the variability dynamics of growth rate parameters in different forest growth conditions. Stabilization of variability is observed for all biogroups of humid and fresh biotopes. In dry biotopes, no stabilization was observed within the study period; this is attributed to moisture deficit and increasing differentiation within the tree stands. The simulation result confirming that the process duration depends on the dominant tree number in the biogroups has been verified; and the coefficients of the corresponding trends are presented. The variability has been found to stabilize slower when the pines grow closer to the northern edge of their range. The obtained results can usefully be applied in the environmental monitoring of forest ecosystems to assess the response of tree stands to both climate change and anthropogenic pollution.
