Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy

The Lesnoy Zhurnal = Russian Forestry Journal’s policy on the use of artificial intelligence in publications and review processes

The Editorial Board of the journal recognizes the increasing availability and use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research and sets the following rules regarding ways in which authors, reviewers, and editorial board members are to work with AI tools.

- Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI; ChatGPT, etc.) cannot be specified as the author. Programs and tools based on AI do not meet the requirements of authorship, since they cannot be responsible for the submitted paper, declare the presence and absence of conflicts of interest, and are not involved in copyright management.

- It is allowed to use AI tools and programs only during abstract preparation and search for additional literature sources. Image generation and editing are prohibited. Authors ought to keep in mind that chatbots frequently transmit false information, which requires additional verification. In order to protect confidentiality, when interacting with GenAI, authors are not recommended to upload confidential information.

- When submitting an article that used AI tools authors have to provide the following information: program title and version, scope of program intervention, query criteria, description of specific tasks that AI was used to accomplish (text editing, data analysis and visualization, literature search, etc.).

- Articles that do not disclose the use of GenAI tools and/or have large fragments of text created using AI may be rejected. When reviewing manuscripts, the editorial staff use the corresponding module of the “Antiplagiat” system, which allows them to detect the text generated by AI.

- Editors, members of the editorial board and reviewers of Lesnoy Zhurnal = Russian Forestry Journal are not allowed to use GenAI when preparing article reviews, since using ChatGPT poses a risk of compromising confidentiality and violating the authors’ intellectual property rights on their work.
