Abstract

This paper examines the issues related to the use of various types of non-wood plant raw materials for the development of new cellulose-based sorbents. The work aims to collect new data on the structural features and sorption properties of non-wood celluloses towards the heavy natural radionuclide uranium-238. Cellulose samples were isolated from the rye straw (Secale), wheat (Triticum), and oats (Avena sativa), as well as from the hogweed stems (Heracleum sosnowskyi) and the brown seaweed (Laminaria digitata). A study of plant raw materials has shown that, in terms of cellulose content, grasses are almost comparable to woody plants, and the cellulose content in their xylem ranges from 45 to 49 %. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that all herbaceous plant celluloses have a virtually identical chemical structure. The surface-pore structure of cellulose was studied by means of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Analysis of nitrogen adsorption behavior has shown that all the studied samples should be classified as mesoporous materials with a low specific surface area. We have determined the general patterns governing the adsorption of uranium-238 from aqueous solutions with low concentrations of uranium-238 (0.750 μg/mL). The studied cellulose samples are characterized by strong retention of uranium-238, a significant portion of which (up to 90 %) is not desorbed by water or by aqueous solutions of CH3COONH4 and HCl (1 M). A correlation has been found between the parameters of the surface-porous structure and the adsorption-desorption parameters. Cellulose derived from hogweed, which has the highest specific surface area, can be recommended for the removal of trace amounts of the radionuclide uranium-238 from aqueous media. The results confirm the high innovative potential of cellulose derived from non-wood plants.
