Hybrid Identity and Choices of Mongolian Youth under Structural Constraints

The study analyses the tension between the globalised hybrid identities emerging among Mongolian youth and the domestic economic structures that restrict their development. The study aims to examine how hybrid identity, as a strategic resource, shapes the educational, professional, and migratory strategies of young Mongolians amid chronic labour market imbalances. The theoretical framework integrates world-systems analysis, concepts of cultural hybridity and multiple identity, social reproduction theory, and capital conversion models, alongside sociopragmatic approaches to reflexive life choices. Methodologically, the study relies on a secondary analysis of statistical data and sociological surveys (2017–2024). The findings indicate that the linguistic, educational, and professional strategies of the youth are instrumental practices of identity construction aimed at maximising aggregate capital. A central paradox is revealed: while hybridity is the primary competitive advantage of the younger generation, the scarcity of high-quality jobs and skills mismatches transform this resource into a major driver of educational and labour emigration. This, in turn, reinforces Mongolia’s position as an exporter of human capital. The study concludes that an institutional shift is needed from passive social support to policies that translate global competencies into national economic growth by aligning educational standards, creating high-productivity jobs, and implementing return-migration programmes. This research helps policymakers create better programs for young people, focusing on keeping talent at home and using the skills of those who move abroad to help the country grow.
