Conceptual Features of the Linguocultural Type “Translator/Interpreter” in Russian and English Linguocultures

Abstract

This article presents the findings of a dissertation segment dealing with a comprehensive study of the linguocultural type (LCT) “Translator/Interpreter” in Russian and English linguocultures. Within this segment, the conceptual characteristics of the specified LCT are investigated through the analysis of dictionary definitions, semantics and etymology of key terms representing this professional role. Methodologically, the work relies on the principles of cultural linguistics, translation studies and semiotics, which involve considering language not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for constructing sociocultural reality. Particular attention is paid to the role of translators/interpreters in intercultural communication, transformation of the perception of their professional activities in a historical context as well as the analysis of synonymous connections and cultural aspects that contribute to a deeper understanding of translation practice. The research takes into account modern trends in the development of the digital environment, which have a direct impact on the transformation of the professional activities of translators/interpreters. The traditional understanding of a translator/interpreter as a specialist transferring the meaning of a text from one language to another is changing under the influence of machine translation and artificial intelligence technologies, leading to a semantic shift in the term. The study identifies key characteristics shaping the image of a translator/interpreter in Russian and English-language cultures and highlights the importance of this profession in a globalizing world. These characteristics include not only linguistic competence but also the ability to adapt, think critically and communicate effectively in different cultural contexts. The data obtained will serve as a basis for further study into the representation of the LCT “Translator/Interpreter” in films and literature, which is the next stage of the dissertation research.
