North Korea from Far and Near: Pages of History and Modernity

Abstract

The article dwells on the problems of history and modernity of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The author points out the reasons behind the growing relevance of these topics. The paper focuses on the historiography, mainly books published in Russia and abroad, of the country’s past and, particularly, contemporary history and current situation, indicating their strengths and weaknesses. The author shares knowledge and impressions gained during his trip to North Korea in the spring of 2025, focusing primarily on the positive aspects. The article provides a brief overview of the ancient history of Korea and describes the state policy of the DPRK on history and historical memory. When considering the country’s contemporary history, special attention is given to North Korean leaders and the formation of their cult of personality. The most important events of the 20th century are analysed in close connection with the modern historical monuments in the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang; the monuments’ features and purpose are described. Further, the article provides an outline of Pyongyang and an overview of its attractions. The author presents his view on the situation in the DPRK and the results of the reforms of recent years, as well as on the country’s level of education, science, economy and defence capabilities. The current state of and prospects for Russia–North Korea relations are evaluated. In addition, the paper points out the contribution of the North Korean soldiers to the liberation of the occupied part of the Kursk Region of Russia.
