This paper examines the tendency toward simplification in the translation of philosophical literary prose. Within linguistics, various forms of simplification–lexical, grammatical, and syntactic – serve to reduce the complexity of a translated text’s structure. However, when dealing with a philosophical work of an American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson “Nature”, it is hermeneutic simplification – which alters the original’s deeper meanings and ideas – that becomes especially significant. The aim of this study is to identify instances of denotative and connotative distortion of some philosophical meanings in R.W. Emerson’s essay “Nature” caused by lexical and grammatical simplification in the Russian translation by A.M. Zverev. The scholarly value of this work lies in its detailed analysis of how lexical substitutions, shifts in grammatical structure, and stylistic changes impoverish the philosophical content. The methodology draws on contrastive and hermeneutic analysis, allowing for the reconstruction of the author’s intended meanings and an assessment of how many of those meanings are lost in translation. The main findings show that semantic simplification in this translation manifests through the replacement of passive constructions with active ones – which erases the idea of human subordination to nature – the avoidance of repetition of the key lexeme unity, and contextual substitutions that blur symbolic overtones (for example, translating creature as child). The value of this research lies in pinpointing those passages where a simplifying translation strategy comes into conflict with the task of adequately conveying the author’s philosophical concept. The practical significance of the results is to demonstrate the need for translator’s commentary in order to preserve the depth of a philosophical text when adapting it for a foreign-language reader. Furthermore, a contrastive linguistic study of the semantic content of R.W. Emerson’s original philosophical essay and its translation allows for a fuller revelation of the source text’s meanings in order to improve translation quality and to account for authorial intentions in future translation versions.
