Abstract

The main goal of the article is to describe the genesis of the English borrowed university macroconcept structure. It is necessary to solve two tasks to achieve this goal: 1. Analyze etymological and explanatory dictionaries to determine the motivating signs of the university macroconcept; 2. Distribute the detected motivating signs among thematic blocks. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the first experience in determining the motivating signs of the borrowed university macroconcept. The research material used 10 dictionaries of the English language (three etymological and seven explanatory dictionaries of the English language). The exact time when the word university appeared in English is unknown. The time of appearance in the English language of the word university dictionaries indicate different - the period from 1250 to 1400. As a result of studying English dictionaries, the identified 31 motivating signs in the structure of the university macroconcept can be combined in the form of eight blocks: 1. Unification ('association', 'all', 'together', 'universal', 'guild', 'group', 'single', 'classes', 'persons / people', 'aggregate', '(co)society', 'general', 'union', 'one', 'whole'); 2. Part of a whole ('industry', 'row'); 3. Knowledge ('academic', 'scientists'); 4. Scale ('universe', 'full', 'universal / versatility'); 5. Institution ('college', 'corporation', 'school'); 6. Gradation ('highest', 'degree'); 7. Education ('science', 'learning'); 8. Opportunity ('right', 'to award').
